After I did the factory reset I can only get a display telling me to "start download of Fitbit App"

When you do a factory reset you need to go through the setup process again to configure it and reconnect it to your phone.
In the app go into your profile settings by selecting your profile image at the top left of the main dashboard and then select "set up a device"

Thanks SteveH. Have tried to do the setup but was unsuccessful. Contacted Fitbit by phone, they tried to help, but in the end they gave up and are replacing the watch.
