Versa Lite will not track bike ride

All location settings are on and I have restarted my fitbit but it constantly says "connecting" when I ride. My husband bought a Versa Lite this week and is having the same problem. Looks like Fitbit has a problem that they can't/won't correct.

I'm not sure what the type of phone the bike app is trying to connect with?

Normally with android I restart the phone.

Is the Fitbit app running in the background while the phone is locked?

Does GPS connect when the Fitbit app is open and fails when the phone locks?

I use an iphone. I have allowed fitbit to run in the background and my GPS settings are on. We did discover that my husband was not taking his phone with him during our ride so that explains his issue.
