Versa cycling after factory reset

I've got a Fitbit Versa which one morning was seemingly dead. I had it on the charger overnight, and when I went to put it on, it was dead.

Online here, I discovered that I could use the two button reset (Power and lower right button) to bring it back to life, which worked. However the watch would not sync with my android smartphone at all using any of the methods I found here, including deleting the app, clearing cache in phone's memory, re-pairing the bluetooth, etc.

Finally I initiated a factory reset via the option under the watch settings. Now I am getting the following message on the watch: Data not cleared. Sync and try again.

From reading here, the fix seems to be doing a factory reset using the three button method. Holding all three buttons, and then releasing the bottom right button after the fitbit logo disappears. I am not getting any vibration to indicate when to release the other two buttons. I have been working on trying to get my fitbit back up working properly all morning, and needless to say it's not.
