I would like to know if you tried to press the lower right button in order to pause the activity and then the upper right button in order to end it. After this, you'll be able to press the left or back button in order to return to the clock face.
If the screen remains stuck, please restart your watch as described in this help article. After this, monitor your watch and see if the issue gets fixed.
