This device is around the 2.5 year old mark, the pedometer works as well as it did the day I got it, notifications with vibrations still work without fail, and apps and clock faces seem completely normal - except the heart rate monitor.
After a little over a year of using this Versa, the heart rate monitor shut off completely - no reading, no red LED, no green LED. I've looked into several community threads regarding similar circumstances since then and discovered it is not an uncommon occurrence. I would just ditch the thing without question and move on to another company if it were as simple as poorly designed technology as such a pattern would suggest.
The heart rate monitor had been dead for the entire period (over a year) until just a few weeks ago, when the LED miraculously started flashing again, and Versa was recording a pulse. It was even tracking my sleep from February 2 up until just this last Friday (March 26) when, Friday night, on its charger, it had stopped working, to be discovered Saturday morning.

There are some findings I would like to share which hint to me that it is not faulty hardware, but faulty firmware/software. When I factory reset Versa (twice [2x]), the heart rate sensor functioned properly directly following setup. However, it would fail again after restarting versa (using left and lower right buttons). I cannot answer why this is happening, but I would be almost certain that a replacement device would not remedy the issue. If anything comes to light, I would hope that the problem(s) could be fixed with a software patch.

Follow up:
After a third attempt at factory resetting Versa, the heart rate monitor now did not return to normal function. I would just like to know what kind of funny business is going on here.

New information: today, I did a standard restart with left and bottom right buttons. Heart rate monitor failed once again. Factory reset does not reliably restore heart rate monitor function.

After a run of HRM working from about mid-april, it is once again not functioning. Didn't do any restart or reset. Versa was simply allowed to charge overnight.
Also still no attempt from Fitbit or anybody else to reach out with an answer or consolation.
