Versa music control don't work if Bluetooth is connected first

I have had this experience with several phones. Music controls will work if I pay music on my phone and open the music controls then connect my Bluetooth. However if I have Bluetooth connected to an audio device first then the watches controls don't work. It says to start playing something first. This is annoying, I'd love it if the music controls always worked.

 

I have the versa 2 and have had the same experience with Samsung galaxy S4 and the Moto g 5g plus.

 

I am constantly without control because I start listening to something first through head phones or a speaker before opening the music controls on my watch.

 

This is one of my favourite features and it is disappointing it doesn't work more smoothly
