I had a fitbit surge and and the screen died so I bought a versa,  it halved the amount of steps the surge showed.  Why?

Hello @Dollybird75 thanks for joining the Fitbit Community, it's great to have you on board.

Fitbit devices have a finely-tuned algorithm for step counting. The algorithm is designed to look for intensity and motion patterns that are most indicative of people walking and running. Additionally, your handedness might affect the way your Versa counts steps. Please go to the Fitbit app and tap on Account > Versa > Wrist Placement and make sure it has been set correctly for the wrist on where you're using your Versa.

Additionally, I would like to suggest you to restart your Versa by pressing and holding the Back and Select buttons (left and bottom right) until you see the Fitbit logo on the screen and monitor it for the next few days.

In case you're still noticing your Versa not counting your steps correctly, please feel free to reply, we'll be happy to continue assisting you.
