Versa not tracking sleep consistently

One of the main reasons for buying my Versa was to log my sleep. Most days it’s fine but recently it’s not been consistent. It often misses the first few hours of my sleep, which totally messes up my sleep history. It’s not because I’m awake - I normally drop off to to sleep within minutes. I’ve googled the problem and now make sure the Versa is high enough up my wrist and not too tight/not too loose. But i’m still having problems. It missed the first 2 hours of my sleep last night 🙁 Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can try next ?

Hi, thanks for all the suggestions. I’ve started checking that my heart
rate is showing on my Fitbit just before I switch off the bedside light.
The last couple of days it has recorded sleep ok but i’ll monitor a bit
more before accepting the solution.

Hi @Sue-in-uk That use to happen to me it would say i had like 3 hours and 22 minutes slept. But i found out that i had senstive sleep on not normal so that could be one reason why it dosent work. The second reason could be you need to sync your fitbit everyday for it to pop up.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions however my Fitbit sleep sensitivity is
already set to normal and it syncs with my phone and iPad multiple times a
day. I’ll continue to monitor my sleep data and, hopefully, there will be
other suggestions that I can try.

Try to restart your Versa (if you haven't done it yet) by pressing and holding the Back and Select buttons (left and bottom right) until you see the Fitbit logo on the screen. Then, monitor your sleep for the next night.

Additionally, please note that the Fitbit app currently has
in-app error notifications that provide an explanation for why you aren't receiving Sleep Stages on any given night. This is meant to provide insight into what might be occurring to cause this. The error messages are the following:

  1. We need more than 3 hours of sleep to reliably calculate your sleep stages.
  2. Your tracker couldn't get a consistent heart rate reading while you slept.
  3. We couldn’t generate sleep stages for this sleep. Please try again tomorrow.
  • For any of the nights you were expecting to see Sleep Stages, did you ever click on the "Begin Sleep Now" or "Add Sleep Log" functions within the Fitbit App?
    • This is important to note because your tracker uses auto-detection to track Sleep Stages; so there's no need to try and remember to click on anything before falling asleep!
  • Do you have at least 3 consecutive hours of sleep?
    • This is important to note because you typically won't see sleep stages if you are waking up multiple times through out the night or taking short naps.
  • Your tracker's battery isn't at a critically low level prior to falling asleep.
  • Your device is tracking and syncing heart rate data.
    • This is important because Sleep Stages uses a combination of your movement and heart-rate patterns.
  • Your Fitbit App is updated to the latest version.

Try this

I have exactly the same problem.  I have only had my Versa for four months but it seems very inconsistent in tracking sleep patterns.  There are many times it will break my sleep up into different time periods, and others when it says I didn't go to sleep until 2 or 3 AM when I know I was asleep shortly after 10PM.  It often says I sleep only 2 to 4 hours a night when I know that isn't accurate.  I have tried resetting and wearing the Versa differently but it is still very inconsistent.  One night it will be accurate and the next not.  Not impressed so far and will likely not be replacing it with another Fitbit.

Yes, mine is the same. I’ve started wearing it tighter than it suggests and
that does seem to help. Also, I check that it is picking up my heartbeat
after I’m in bed. It still doesn’t always monitor my sleep properly though
🙁 As it’s the main reason for me buying my Fitbit Versa I am disappointed.
It wasn’t cheap - especially as I bought one with a fabric strap (one of
the special edition ones).

It seems to work pretty well tracking steps and other things but sleep seems to give it particular problems. I'm sure they need to tweak the software a little but probably not going to happen anytime soon. I'll live with it for now.
