Want to receive notifications on my Versa 2 only when phone is locked not unlocked

Hello there.  Ive just bought a Versa 2, that I’ve connected to my iPhone xr. I’ve set up my watch to receive text message notifications, 
thinking that my watch would only receive the texts when my phone is locked. What’s happening though is that even when my phone is unlocked and I’m using my phone, if I get a text it will also vibrate and pop up on watch, every time. It isn’t necassary because I’m using my phone, I don’t need the alert.

Is there any way to set my watch/phone so the watch only receives texts when my iphone  is LOCKED?
