The one hole is the microphone and the other is the barometer used in measuring stairs.

Looks like the barometric pressure port that I have on my Versa 1. A ten foot change in altitude adds 1 floor to your measurements.

No @Den_in_USA the hole on the side is the microphone. The hole on the back is the barometer.

I have that microphone there too but there is also a hole on the right side of the watch that is not a microphone.

Both the holes are places to let water get inside the watch and kill it. I wrote the question below to customer support but they don't seem to want to answer it.

So can/may I swim with the replacement? Your customer support people say it's "water resistant" to 40 meters, which of course makes no sense. It's either waterproof to 40 meters or it's water resistant which means it won't be damaged if it gets a little wet. My last two (2!) died while I was swimming so...
Waiting with bated breath for your response.

Sorry but both holes are for specific hardware that does seal the hole.

As for water proof vs water resistant it does make sense.

Water proof means that no matter how much water pressure is applied the device will not be harmed.

Water Resistant means that their is a limit to the amount of water pressure

However the best reason to not use waterproof is because in the 1960's the United States federal government made it illegal to use the term waterproof when it comes to watches.

Illegal? Come on. In fact there is no law to fear from anywhere, let alone
the ISO which is a standards organisation. Also the number of watch
manufacturers which overtly demonstrate compliance with ISO 2281 as a
marketing tool is quite small.

It's also 22810 these days, and it's a quite different standard to the old
ISO 2281 by all accounts. I don't think that's reached any manufacturer
yet, as they all seem to be sticking with the former, rather meaningless
30/50/100/20/etc m ratings.

Maybe not illegal but in the 60's the government said that manufacturers can no longer use the term waterproofThe when describing a mechanical watch

30/40/50 etc is simply another way of referring to the pressure rating
