Two fold question:

I just downloaded a playlist onto my VERSA. Is it normal that it drained about 20% of my battery?

and,

Should I wait until the battery is very low/ or wait for the device to die before I charge it?

Never wait for the battery to completely deplete. That can permanently damage a lithium ion battery.
