Why does my Versa mark my Walking as Elliptical?

When I go out for my 2+ mile walks, it reads as Elliptical.  Anyone know why?  Does it make any difference to my data?

Why?  **shrug** Realize that it is trying to tell what activity you are doing just from your wrist movements.  It usually gets walks right for me, but elliptical seems to be a common mis-characterization.

But I can tell you 2 ways to avoid this:

  • If you never do elliptical, remove it from the auto-recognized activity list.  On phone app, tap exercise tile, then gear icon near top right.  Select elliptical (or anything else you never do) and disable it.
  • Instead of relying of auto-recognition, use the Exercise App where you tell it what activity you are doing and when you start and stop.  To get started, scroll right from clock face to 'Exercise'.  See How do I track my workouts with my Fitbit device?

Does it make a difference?  Good question.  I lean toward 'No' other than the classification in the log, but others say 'Yes'.

One way to test that would be to use the Exercise App as mentioned above.  Do 2 walks as similarly as you can, calling one 'Walk' and the other 'Elliptical' and compare the results.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
