If the Versa is synced up does it save calendar events?  My wife wants it for work to notify her of meetings without having to carry her phone.

Regarding your inquiry, your Fitbit Versa can receive notifications to keep you informed, such as text messages, phone calls, and meeting alerts, when your phone is nearby. For more information about this, I recommend checking the How do I get notifications from my phone on my Fitbit device? article.

From my understanding, the Versa only relays notifications and messages sent to your phone, it does not receive them itself. So the phone would have to be within Bluetooth range of the Versa. Your wife could leave her phone in her purse which is sitting in her desk while working at her desk and receive the notifications, but not leave her phone at her desk and walk around the office building and receive notifications, for example.
