is there a way to view heart rate history on an hourly basis -  all I have found is daily, which I assume is average for the day.

 

It would also be interesting to see the heart rate displayed during different sleep cycles

Look at fitbit.com dashboard in a web browser.  You can get a graph of heart rate, and other data, in 15  minute increments.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
