new Versa 2 won't pair with smartphone

I bought a Versa 2. When I try to pair it with my smartphone, it will give me four numbers, which I put into app on phone.  Then, it says connecting.  But, it locks up or something.  It stays on that screen for hours.  There is a statment that says it is taking longer than usual, please be patient.  I waited three hours.  Nothing.  Anyone have any ideas?
