tracking steps in the water

Is it possible to track steps in the pool? When my versa gets wet, it stops tracking steps. I can track distance and active minutes by turning on a 'swimming' workout, but that doesn't track heart rate and doesn't count toward steps or accurately reflect calories burned. When I turn on 'treadmill' it counts heart rate and time elapsed, but not steps or active minutes (ok, to be accurate, I recorded about 65 steps in a 75 minute pool walk).

I expect it's not actually directly from the Versa getting wet.  Look at what your arm/wrist is doing.  Is it swinging front and back continuously as if walking on land?  Even if your legs are stepping, if your arms are not swinging too, the Versa on your wrist cannot see that.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
