Add Snow Shoveling as exercise shortcut

After spending the last four days shoveling, pushing cars out of snow drifts, etc pre:post snowzillia my FitBit Flex barely made a dent, with a exception of some elevated calories burned. I can tell you I felt physically exhausted each night. Much more so then working out at the gym or walking 6-8 miles. Would love to see some options such heavy snow shoveling be added. I fell strongly that my weekly report will be most inaccurate this week.

Cc45angel, Nope, not going to stop asking for this entirely reasonable addition to the database.  Since you obviously don't need it, why reply so many times except that you're a troll?  IT'S SO EASY TO IGNORE a feature/calc request you don't need personally.

I actually live in DSM IA, and I shoveled last night and I put shoveling into MY database b/c it takes about 4 seconds. I personally just believe in doing things that I can do myself instead of complaining about things. It's disturbing that since I found a solution and shared it you think I'm a troll as opposed to trying to help. There's is a great solution already available. Can't help people that won't help themselves I suppose. Good luck for waiting around on something you can complete in less than 10 seconds yourself. Thanks!!!

You miss the point entirely.   It's a calculation that I, and others,  want.  They have a mechanism to request it, we have and are.  You act like it costs you something personally to have it added to the database.  Yes, there's a custom feature, thanks.  It's disturbing that you think your tone was "helpful".

Yes- please add snow shoveling! Anyone who lives in the north knows it is a killer workout!

Many people I know (including myself) play a lot of softball almost year round and usually on multiple leagues (subbing for other teams in between) so that might be a exercise to add. Thanks

I live in New England and just did a lot of shoveling after the recent snow storm. I'm bummed that my Alta doesn't record "shoveling" as I just worked my butt off and wish to record it as a weekly exercise. I think I read somewhere that it used to be included but Fitbit trimmed down a lot of recordable exercises that weren't being used frequently, but I feel that snow shoveling, snow blowing, etc, should be available to record for the many of us who live in colder climates. I hope to see some of these options added in the near future. Thank you! 🙂

Softball is needed for sure.

Guess I don't get why you would limit the list.

Spots for custom ideas would be great.

I am a multisport person and I wish to have some more sports on the Fitbit. I would like to see stuff like soccer, hockey, dance, lacrosse, field hockey, ect. I think this would help people like me to get a more accurate step count.

Thank you,

Elizabeth

It would also be great if you could add:

-Roller skating

-Step (aerobics class)

-Scooter

-Power jump (cardio exercise with a trampoline)

Thank you!

Hi @AKiick thanks for your suggestion. I just wanted to update you that this has been partially implemented on Fitbit Ionic. Fitbit Ionic tracks over 20 types of activities with real-time stats using Exercise mode, including biking, bootcamp, circuit training, elliptical, golfing, hiking, kickboxing, martial arts, Pilates, running, spinning, stair climber, swimming, tennis walking, weights, yoga, Treadmill, Interval workout and a generic workout mode. The circuit training is probably going to be close to the cross trainer. You can only have 7 saved shortcuts at any time, so if you delete one and then press the + sign in the top right of the app, you'll be able to select from the 20 exercise modes on offer.

You can learn more about Fitbit Ionic at https://www.fitbit.com/ionic, and the rest of the Fitbit family of products at https://www.fitbit.com/compare.

I'll leave your suggestion open for now as there are other exercise ideas there not yet created. Thanks for posting.

I'd like to see snow shoveling but I am afraid they will screw it up like they did with PiYo.  They have this but it gives not caloric burn nor does it take this as active time.  If Yoga is active PiYo is active.

At this point I'd settle for them removing that stupid, stupid stupid, stupid message I get everytime I try to log an exercise that reminds me I have an iPod touch with only WiFi.

Here is a newsflash fitbit people I KNOW THAT.

I do not need to be reminded of this every time I log an activity and BTW why does it matter for Yoga or weight lifting.

I see mowing your lawn is a choice to log as a activity.   In the spirit of that,  shoveling snow should also be a choice.     In the northeast we do plenty of that and it is definitely a workout.  Thanks.

I would like to be able to select “Snow removal” or “Shovelling” as an exercise category.  I find that shovelling my driveway is a great cardio workout, but the closest I can come to identifying it in the options presented is “Workout” or “Mowing lawn” (which is hard to confuse with any other exercise I might be doing, since there isn’t much grass mowing done in December in my part of the world).

@Julbird it would be very be musical to put your subject into the title, then the ace brought up the existing request

I can NOT use the Android app to add "Shoveling Snow" to the app to track this as Exercise.  I live in Minnesota and shovel snow regularly.  Why can't I track that as an exercise?  It's much different than tracking steps.  It's much more of upper body exercise.  Add this to the app, and allow people to enter it.

According to what I've been able to Google it burns about 223 Calories every 30 minutes..... personally I think that is a little light, but it depends on how dense the snow is, but it would be a good figure to start with.

I would like to see snow shoveling added to the exercise log pull down menu. I have been posting this suggestion for at least two years in the Fitbit Community. I can't imagine that it would be that difficult.

There are a lot of Fitbit users out there shoveling a lot of snow. I shoveled snow yesterday and lost two pounds. Perhaps, ther could be choices like "Snow Shoveling - Light/Fluffy Snow," and "Snow Shoveling - Heavy/Wet Snow" with the estimated calorie expeditures. If there's anybody out there like me, I would have a much more positive attitude about snow shoveling if I knew I could easily and "somewhat accurately" get "credit" by doing it! There have been more than a few responses to my posts regarding snow shoveling that agree with me, and advocate that this change be made to the exercise log feature. Please Fitbit!

I agree 100%!  I live in the snow belt. There are few winter exercises as strenuous as shoveling snow, especially the heavey wet kind. Please add that as a trackable exercise.

This has bugged me for years. Why do you not have snow shoveling and snow blowing as activities. Those of us who live in the northern tier of states spend a LOT of time during winter doing these vigorous activities.

Personally I just don't like that when snow blowing I need to take the device off because it can't tell that the violent vibration isn't walking.

I agree!!! I live in Winnipeg- snow shovelling is a regular workout here in the 6 months of winter. Why isn’t this a trackable activity? It boggles my mind that any type of shovelling isn’t listed, but gardening, lawn mowing is?!!
