Add custom notes to Sleep Log or Rate Sleep

In order to effectively use the sleep log to improve sleep quality, I think it might be helpful to be able to annotate each log entry with comments about things that might affect sleep quality (eg alcohol consumption, use of sleeping tablet, late caffeine intake, late exercise, meditation/ relaxation, consumption of unusual foods etc). Then, on review of several weeks/ months of sleep logs, patterns may become evident.

I want to be able to add notes to my sleep data about how I slept, if I got up, if there was another body (human or more likely for me, animal) in the bed, if I drank/smoked, my dreams, etc. I want to be able to pinpoint patterns to optimize my sleep.

Hi @ashmickay, many thanks for taking the time to share this idea with us. This feature suggestion already exists so I’ve moved your post here.

Thanks for participating in Feature Suggestions!

Where is "here" you didn't provide an updated link to where you moved my request to and I can't find it.

I also just checked the APP and this feature DOES NOT EXIST.

@Lobster2 App does not exist, but the suggestion for it does, so they moved your suggestion to this thread. It was first suggested in 2015 however we are still eagerly waiting for Fitbit to get on it!

@desokidthanks for the clarification!

@ashmickay

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - this sleep notes suggestion, as well as the request to stop the light turning on when sleeping, have been around for simply ages - years in fact - the reality is that it appears that FB allocates zero resources to software development, since there is no profit incentive to do so. To be fair, they are a rock in a hard place (!) since income is only generated by new hardware sales and they have no doubt had their sales hit hard by competitors. Software enhancements are a cost, not an income.

If I had read the forum before buying my Charge 3, I might have decided against it, after seeing that FB appears to listen, but not act upon feature suggestions.

I totale agree with you @SunsetRunner

If you got a good idea, FB mentioned there is already a post about it, moves your message and than that is it.

If got my Fitbit Versa for about a year now and I've never seen one update that consists a new feature.

If I knew this before, I would have never bought my Versa.

So they better close the whole section where you can make suggestions because they will never implement them.

And I never read any comment from FB in a suggestion except that someones posted suggestion has been moved....

I asked a question on 03-21-2019 in this post, never got an answer

So @GraceGFitbit could you please tell us if this suggestion from 2015!!! will ever be integrated or do I really have to switch to another brand?

exactly! every night can be so different. It would be great to be able to
personalise all the sections with a note or some kind of edit.

It would beneficial to add notes to all the different sections of data. For example, adding pre-bedtime routine to the sleep data or adding stress level to the heart rate data. I suffer from migraines so adding a note about medication intake to a general note area would be fantastic.

wow wow wow. Why is this still not done? Please! Surely it would take no time to add a simple text box at least for users to add their own notes?. Later develop some checkboxes, and just let people assign their own meaning to each check box. Let people define check boxes the way it suits them EG 1/caffiene. 2/Sleeping tablet. 3/ Red Wine. 4/ late chocolate. 5. CPAP. Whatever. Then at least we can track a few things ourselves. It doesn't matter now whether all that info can be reanalyzed and graphed, just get it recorded. Later it would be a fantastic resource to answer questions like: Does anti-histamine affect my deep sleep? Does alcohol / salicylates / phenols / late exercise / red-wine-white-wine / swimming versus riding / late dinner versus early / air-conditioning ... Oh my goodness. This would make the sleep cycle analysis so much more useful.

If fitbit don't get their act together a competitor will and the testimonials and advertising from this will sell it far and wide. Imagine the advert where someone says, "I had no idea that my anti-histamine/room temperature/ swimming  was affecting my sleep in this way"." Now I can double the time I spend in deep sleep each night by avoiding xyz. I'm so much more productive / healthy / like a new person."

Blah blah. Ka-Ching.

If it would cost a few dollars each month, would there be any interest in a small app which would pull your sleep data out of the FitBit and allow you to add personalised categories - thus fulfilling the requirements of this often repeated request?

In other words, if FitBit won't do it, would users pay a small monthly fee for it?

I probably would

It would beneficial to add a notes field (just like this one I'm typing into now) to all the different tiles on the website dashboard. For example, adding a bullet list of pre-bedtime routines to the sleep data and adding stress level to the heart rate data. I suffer from migraines so adding a note about medication intake to a general note area would be fantastic. I would think that anyone in the medical profession would have requested this feature ages ago. I know that my doctor would be ecstatic if I could pass on all these stats and my detailed notes (log) in one piece.

I would pay for an app, but probably not be willing to pay a monthly fee.  I have one app that will pull data from my fitbit, but does not allow that type of added information.

I'd love to be able to add notes or tags to my sleep logs. Things like whether I missed my medication dosage (which affects my sleep), or whether I fell asleep on the couch (which usually makes my sleep shorter and lighter). It would help me track trends over the months, so I could understand my sleep needs better, and look to making improvements. Thanks!

Yes exactly! The fitbit needs to be able to be tailored to each individuals
own lifestyle so that we can get the most out of having one.

Yes, sleep notes would be a nice feature!

I think tags versus notes are prob more what we want- so we can sort by similar terms. I also would

like this for the period tracker.

Why hasn't this been done yet?

Two out of two times that I took a sleeping pill the Fitbit failed to record sleep stages. I only got periods of sleep, awake and restless. It didn't make much sense. What's up? I would like to note those nights that I had taken a sleeping pill.

Re:  Taking sleeping pills/sleep stages
I use sleeping pills nearly every night.  There are a couple things that impact how sleep stages are recorded, in my experience.  On occasion I am too restless or do not sleep in long enough periods, and I don't have the normal sleep stages recorded.  From time to time I seem to sleep in a position where my fitbit won't read, i. e., I lay against my arm and the fitbit is pushed away from the skin or presses into the skin too much.  Perhaps when you use the sleeping pills you sleep harder and don't recognize that you are pushing against the fitibit while you sleep.
It would certainly be helpful to be able to track variables in pre-sleep behavior and environment issues!  I wish they would change the app to enable that.

Good information. Thanks. I have suspected the sleeping hard in a bad position theory.

It would be great to be able to make a note after each night of sleep. Did I meditate or take CBD? Did I eat late? Did my boyfriend thrash around and accidentally start fighting bad guys that resulted in a rogue punch to my face? Jokes aside these things would be soooo helpful to see how it affects my sleep cycles!

Thank you!
