Pause step counting while Fitbit device is lying on desk

Strange. Left versa on desk, went to sleep & woke up to see ~1,250 steps. Read some other post - sync with mobile, etc. My mobile has 100 steps (from waking up & making coffee)... so not aligned here. In app - "today" says 1250, but when I click on steps - it says 0 ... so something is not aligned there. Please help
