Have an indicator on your profile that shows others if you're currently active in challenges, and if you're at the maximum allowed.

Moderator edit: Clarified subject and updated label
This is needed because:
This would let your friends know whether or not you may be up for a challenge invite. Also it would prevent you having to post on their invite that you're maxed out and unable to join.
I'd use this: Weekly

I like this idea a lot! It would be great if they could implement something in the invite list that says that you’re maxed out on challenges so you don’t have to look at a person’s profile.
