On future watches use a bootloader that if two bootable images exist let the user decide which to boot. This would avoid for the most part bricking devices with a firmware image update as the user could always go back to the previous image. It would require an updated bootloader and sufficient memory to hold two OS copies.
The frequency of image updates causing issues with watches seems to be very high if using the Fitbit community as a source of information. Not every user has issues so it is not a systemic problem. When a forced update creates issues with customer devices, something has to be done. Either it is better testing or a way to back out an update.
