Application development

ANSWERED

I am planning a research that collects real time health status of a group of people (possibly around 30) at the same time. Fitbit seems to be a good product for this test, so I wonder if I could have the SDK to develop an application for this purpose with Fitbit Inspire HR. If not, which wristband or smart watch would allow development, or am I not allowed to develop such an application? Also, is it possible that I build a Windows application that runs on PCs such that the data goes to our servers via the direct connection between the fitbit product and a computer with Fitbit Connect? Finally, if everything is possible, do I need to pay a license fee for the SDK? Thanks a lot.

Thanks for your questions.

No, we only provide an SDK for our smartwatch devices.

Also, is it possible that I build a Windows application that runs on PCs such that the data goes to our servers via the direct connection between the fitbit product and a computer with Fitbit Connect?

You can relay data from the smartwatch to a webserver via the companion API. Fitbit Connect is not required.

Finally, if everything is possible, do I need to pay a license fee for the SDK?

The SDK is free.

Hi @AidanAvat  you posted this in the Inspire & Inspire HR forum area. I'm moving it to the SDK Development forum for more relevant responses.

Thanks a lot for your reply. May I further ask about the development?

First, if Fitbit Inspire HR is not available for development, we would like to turn to smart watches, could all models of watches be developed? We prefer the Fitbit Versa Lite so I wonder if this model can be developed.

Also, about relaying data to a web server with companion API, do you mean that we could directly connect the smart watches to a Wi-Fi and upload data to our server? Or you mean another device is needed to pair up with the watch and then upload real time data? If that is the case, could this device be a PC instead of smart phones?

Lastly, regarding the free SDK, I wonder if it is still free if it is for commercial uses or research purposes. If not, may I have some information about the price?

Thank you very much!

1) yes, Fitbit Lite can be used. Please take in consideration that since the Lite has no Wifi it won't be so immediate to test the app on the watch itself during the development as you should heavily rely on the simulator

2) No, Fitbit trackers exclusively dilogue via internet through Fitbit app installed on a paired smartphone as there is no direct access to internet (and anyway the Lite doesn't have wifi communication)

3) Yes it should be free but here @JonFitbit could be more precise.
