Depth measuring

I'd like to find out more on how to measure depth instead of altitude with a FitBit, for example to see how deep one might have gone in a snorkel or freedive event.

Where should I start?

Fitbit counts floors using the barometer sensor, but since that's based on air pressure, I have no idea how that would perform under water.

There's a sample sensors project in Fitbit Studio which shows the raw sensor values. Perhaps you could start with that, and see what happens.
