How long does an app keep running?

How long will an app keep running without interaction?

I have made a simple lap counter/timer app.  It works great when I am running and remember to tag each lap.  I recently was walking and forgot to hit the lap counter.  At some point, my app was closed and my Ionic went back to the clock screen on its own.  How long do I have before this happens?  Is there a way to effect this duration?
