Mask with gradient to fill ARC

I am trying to colour an ARC with a gradient mask, but currently that is not working. I add the arc into the mask, and add a rectangle gradient, but the ARC just doesn't show up.

 

Maybe my code is completely wrong, but anyone have any example code to share?
