After firmware update (Aug 2024) bug: prompt asking to end exercise

After the recent firmware update my sense 2 watch prompts me asking to end exercise 5 minutes into spin workout, and sporadically during workout. I start the spin workout from the watch, and do not have “auto recognize” turned on…. This just started happening after the watch firmware update. I have restarted the watch, double checked settings and restarted the phone, and phone app.
Hope an easy fix, this is annoying. If I miss the prompt it will end my workout.

As you can see, auto recognize doesn't even have Spinning as one of its options, so disabling all will do nothing.  Tech support is just shooting in the dark.  If their suggestion didn't work, they will likely have you logout, clear cache on app, clear data on app, uninstall app, factory reset your fitbit, then your phone.

Fitbit has 2 ways of detecting exercise.  One is SmartTrack, configured via the app under Auto-recognize, and will start tracking exercise in the background without you knowing it.  The other is Auto-start, which starts the exercise app, with all its heartrate and timer display on the Sense 2.  It is configured under the specific exercise of the Exercise app on the tracker by enabling/disabling the auto-start.  It also has the ability to enable/disable auto-stop your exercise.  This is what you have to disable.

You have to turn auto-stop feature off in the spinning routine.  I had some people's spin routine constantly stopping after 15 min or so, but I never had that issue.  It might be because the routine they follow includes a lot of spurious arm movements that might be perceived as not doing spinning.

That doesn’t really apply here. I am still riding when this happens. Sorry I somehow selected this as the best answer, and it’s not.

auto-detection of spinning is a new feature, so auto-stop is set on by default for that activity.  Turn of that setting or ride more vigorously.  I wear my Sense 2 on my upper forearm, so maybe it has more movement there, and easier to recognize as spinning.

I have auto recognize off for all activities. And this just started last week after the firmware update. Just got off the phone with tech support. They had me replace the sense 2 in my app. Hopefully that does the trick. We shall see. Thank you for your suggestions though.

I finally found those settings you mentioned and turned both off. Must say that’s a weird/crazy thing to be added, I guess with the firmware update. Someone didn’t think that one through completely before adding those to the Fitbit.
thank you for sharing, have a good day

This is happening for me, too! Every spin class I look down to find my watch asking me if I want to end the exercise, or find it has already ended it for me. Every single spin class. Its extremely frustrating. I'm glad you posted about this.

Thank you! You mentioned you found "both" settings and turned them "both" off? I'm struggling to find a way to turn off "auto-recognize." I found each exercise and turned off "auto-start" on each of them. But the only place I see "auto-recognize" is directly above the list of exercises and there's no toggle to turn it off. Does yours look differently than mine? Thank you!

From the watch go to exercises, select spin for example. Then scroll down below the start arrow to the settings. You’ll see an auto recognize there. Hope that helps.

There are 2 places to turn off recording exercises automatically.

From the watch, under a specific exercise, you scroll down and turn off auto-start and auto-stop.  This prevents the starting of the exercise app on the watch, The exercise app on the watch will display time, heartrate, speed, etc.

From the app, under exercise, you can turn off auto-recognize.  This prevents your watch from recording an exercise in the background.  You might want to keep this on, just in case you go for a casual walk (or any other unplanned activity), where it will later show up as a that activity in the app.

YES!!! Thank you SO much. I found "auto-stop after 5min if not spinning" and turned that off, as well as turning off "auto-start."

What a pain! 2 weeks of spin classes where I was having to check my watch every few minutes to make sure it didn't shut off lol I really appreciate your help/replies!

I have to keep auto-stop enabled because on my Sense 2 the ongoing exercise screen would disappears, making it inaccessible.  They watch looks just looks like it in regular mode where I can access every other app except the exercise app.  I need auto-stop to be enabled to stop the exercise for me when I can't.  Although sometimes it doesn't know I finished the exercise and I end up with a spin session that is 18 hours long (or the ongoing exercise session re-appears on the screen where I can eventually stop it).

Keeping auto-stop enabled is annoying.  I see some 5 minute spin sessions here and there because it thought I stopped for some apparent reason.  Now I am trying to be more aware of all the vibration notifications, and much of it is activity minutes notification, other app notification, etc.  I use to ignore all vibrations, now I have to see what each one is and it is just so distracting.

I am having the same problem that I also believe it started after last firmware update.

That's frustrating. So the exercise screen just completely goes away? What happens if you then click on the exercise option again? The recording stats are gone? Are they still recording the whole time, you just can't see/find it?

Turning off auto-stop and auto-recognize did the trick for me. It hasn't shut off during my spin classes since I did that.

Mine is doing the same thing.  Also, my FitFace clockface keeps changing randomly without being initiated by me.  So irritating.  I have also restarted the phone, restarted the Fitbit and the phone app.  I went a step further and did a factory reset on my Fitbit and it is still happening.  I then installed the Fitface clockface and select one of my paid for designs and it stays for a while and then just goes back to the generic fitface clockface randomly.  Mine detects spinning in the morning when I'm brushing my teeth with my oralB.  This all started about a month or so ago, so I am attributing it to the firmware update also.  I've used FitFace for years without issue.

I just want to add my watch is Versa 4. I disabled all of the auto-detects, then enabled three of them back (walk, bike, and elliptical) . It did NOT help. Then Uninstalled/deleted the app from my iPhone and then installed it again. That also did NOT help. I am still having the same problem.

to those who are suggesting to disable the auto-detect completely, I don't think that is an option. I'd say if that is what I need to do to make it work, I would rather to toss the Fitbit and go buy an Apple Watch.

I hope they figure it out and fix this soon, because I have been fitbit's customer for close to 6 years. I am getting close to quite and switch to Apple.
