My Fitbit now shows the date instead of the battery percentage when I put it on the charger. Also certain features like find my phone and cancel no longer show the words

Hi @Arlyne - first sync the watch, if you can, then try to do a restart by holding the button for 10 seconds and then wait for it to restart.
Place on charge to see if it is normal again.
This may not be sufficient though and a factory reset may be required, if you can get to settings to do it.
If not contact support to guide you through a button factory reset.
If a factory reset is needed, note anything special things you have installed or settings you have made first as it will have to be redone.
