It is supposed to turn on when it detects that your wrist has turned towards your face. In reality, it does an OK job of detecting that but not 100% - and if you don't use sleep mode it loves to come on when you roll over at night. If you don't want it to come on when you rotate your wrist to look at the display, set it to "button only" under settings, display, wake mode.
