Exercise pauses when I skip songs/change volume on iPhone

I have a Fitbit sense and iPhone 6s. Everything has been updated. I listen to music using the music app on my phone, but when I change the volume on my phone, or skip a song on my phone, it pauses my exercise without warning. 

I’ve only tried this on the treadmill. I’m continuously running, and I’m in the cardio or peak hr zones. 
Is this a bug? Have I missed something?

Hi @Shannon111 are you using the side button to access the music controls?
