I was trying to set up a Fitbit Sense which hadn’t been used for a while. It needed to sit on the charger for a while, but eventually woke up and I was able to begin the setup process. It reached the stage where the app wanted to update the Sense, but it didn’t yet have 40% charge. No problem, I left Sense and phone alone and got on with other stuff.
When I returned the app was looping through the “Updating” animation and the Sense screen was blank and the device in responsive. It was no longer visible in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. I gave it a while longer but neither responded. I restarted the Fitbit app and naturally the Sense is no longer visible to that.
I’ve tried to reset the Sense with the side button to no avail. It occasionally makes a long or a short vibration while it’s sitting on the charger, but these aren’t correlated with anything I’m doing. I’ve removed the Sense from the app and from the phone’s Bluetooth settings and tried to go through the onboarding process but of course it’s not showing up any more.
I suspect the battery died during the firmware update and it is now toast, but I thought I might as well ask if anyone had been able to rescue a Fitbit Sense from this state!

I left it charging all day and it is now showing the Fitbit logo, and will occasionally vibrate in response to button presses, but doesn’t actually respond. The logo never goes away, even after button presses that should lead to the device restarting.
Mine lives again! I had to let the battery run to zero, then when I started it charging again, I eventually got a red X and a warning message. From here I was able to get it to sync enough to start the restore process. This time the update seems to be working.
Ten minutes later:
Nope, spoke too soon, when I was singing it wanted to update, and at about 50% of the update it flicked to black and had to be started up again with the power button. Sigh.
Ten minutes later:
Well it seems to be back for good this time. Phew.
