how can I track open water swims with my Sense?

I tried tracking an open water swim today for the first time and all it did was record the time that elapsed between me starting to swim taking and ending it.  No other data at all.  As swimming is there in the list of sports that can be tracked,  along with walking and cycling,  if assumed it would track the swim with GPS as it does for those activities.  It seems not,  which is very disappointing indeed for a device at this price.  I may have made the wrong choice... or can someone tell me how to make it happen?

Fitbit doesn't and never supported open water swimming.

Thank you for responding - for a device with GPS in this price range, that
is very disappointing indeed.... I like it in other respects, but this is
a big omission for me.
