About: Sleep Tracking

Hello everyone!

Recently, I've seen a few different questions about sleep tracking. Because of this, I thought I'd create a short tutorial on how to properly track sleep, how sleep tracking may be done with each device, and what the results look like on the Dashboard. We'll also be sure to touch on manually logging sleep. Let's begin!

Sleep Tracking: Sleep tracking is used to help quantify the hours- and better understand the quality- of your sleep. There are a number of different ways you can track your sleep, the easiest of which being using the sleep tracking functionality on your tracker itself, if possible (please note that neither the Fitbit Zip nor the Fitbit Ultra support sleep tracking). Finally, while the majority of users fall under the 'normal' category, we also have the sensitive sleep option for the users that do not. Be sure to take a look at our article, and set your sensitivity accordingly!

Flex- To enter sleep mode using your Flex, try rapidly tapping your device's display for a few seconds, or until you feel a vibration and a light pattern (simultaneously). @RickyFitbit provides a step-by-step in this post!

Fitbit One- To enter sleep mode one the Fitbit One, simply press and hold the button on the device for about 2.5 seconds, which is when you feel a vibration and your device's display turns into a stop watch. That stopwatch represents the amount of time in bed thus far.

Fitbit Force- Similar to the Fitbit One, you'll be pressing and holding the physical button on the device for about 2.5 seconds, which is when you would feel the vibration and your device's display turns into a stop watch. As of a October 2014, Force tracks sleep automatically! Simply wear your device to bed- when your tracker syncs with your account, you will be able to view your sleep stats on the dashboard.

Fitbit Charge, Charge HR, and Surge- Similar to the Fitbit Force, you Charge will allow you to track sleep automatically.  Simply wear your device to bed! An alternative option would be to press and hold the button on the device before and after sleep, similar to Force and Fitbit One.

Remember, it's important to put the device into sleep mode as you're getting into bed, and take it out of sleep mode once you're waking up. After your first sync since post wake-up, you will see a sleep quality graph on your Dashboard (MAC/PS/iOS device, Android device, or Windows Phone). Here's a few examples of the same graph using different platforms:

(Website Dashboard)

(iOS)
undefined
(Android)
undefined
(Windows Phone)

Now that we've covered tracking sleep with your device, we can cover what happens if you forget to log your sleep!

Manually Sleep Tracking- This method can be used for when users forget to track their sleep at night. The process uses the following steps:

  1. Go to your sleep log page.
  2. Enter the time you went to bed on the previous day.
  3. Enter the time you left bed the day of.
  4. Select 'Log Sleep'
undefined

Afterwards, you should be all set! Your graph will appear as it would with tracker sleep recording across all platforms. Be sure to reach out with any and all questions!

Important notes:

  • After syncing, you'll see your sleep graph with three different sleep states (asleeprestless, and awake😞

-Asleep: When your body is completely at rest and unmoving.

-Restless: This state indicates that your body transitioned from a very restful position with little movement to movement, such as turning over in bed. This doesn't necessarily mean that you were fully awake or cognizant of your movements, but it may indicate that you were not getting the most restful sleep possible at that time.

-Awake: As the name of the state implies, this would indicate that you were moving so much that restful sleep would not be possible.

  • We use these three states of sleep to calculate your sleep efficiency, which is the most prominently displayed number on the sleep tile/graph. To learn more about the sleep states and sleep efficiency, check out this help article regarding sleep!

But what do you DO with that information? How can knowing how many minutes of restlessness I experience help me to get better sleep?

Hi there, I got a fitbit ultra a few years ago. It has been in my drawer for the last couple years and i've just dug it out now with renewed fitness intentions. According to the article the Ultra can't track sleep, but I remember mine having that capability when I first got it. Has something changed?? Will I still be able to track my sleep quality???

So there is no way that you can actually get the sleep in the task bar

Yes, the Fitbit Ultra does track sleep. I'm not sure why the person who started this thread said that. I was tracking my sleep on my Ultra (just checked pictures online to make sure I had an Ultra) up until last week when I bought a Flex to replace it because it is starting to fall apart. To start and end sleep mode on your Ultra, just press and hold the button for a couple of seconds. The clock will start counting. At the end of your sleep period, the display flashes up with the number of steps/etc for the time you were sleeping.

You could also use the same method to enter and exit activity mode, so if you were going for a walk or run, you could track the walk/run as a separate activity and count the steps for that individual activity apart from your daily step count (although they would still be included in the daily total). It knows if you're doing a walk rather than sleeping because of how active you are. I'm wondering now if my Flex can be used to track activities too in the same way, I suppose I could give it a try, and delete the sleep record if it makes one of those. Disappointingly, the Flex didn't come with any instruction booklet, unlike the Ultra. It's a bit of a nuisance to have to go online and search for every little bit of information on it.

The charge tracker does not record my sleep very good. It is impossible for me to only be getting one hour of sleep each evening. The software needs to be fixed.

Hi Bill25. Do you have your tracker set to "sensitive" instead of "normal"? This sounds like it may be your problem.

My flex has stopped calculating my actual time slept. The past couple of mornings its said that I've had over 7 hours of sleep but if you take away the minutes that I've been awake and restless its been less than 6 hours. Does anyone know what could be wrong. Thanks for the help.

I have a Force and although I can push the button to say I'm going to sleep, it appears to totally ignore this.  The next day, it reports when it thinks I went to sleep regardless of when the button was pushed to start or stop sleep.  Even more frustrating, it reports that I'm asleep on the occasional night when I watch TV -- not in bed and sitting in a chair!

I want to stick with Fitbit and want to upgrade to one of the new higher-end devices but I'm going to have to go to another brand (e.g., the Jawbone UP3) unless you can get sleep fixed.  It has to work accurately.

Thanks,

Tahl (@tam94131)

I'm brand new to FitBit Flex. The first two nights I tracked my sleep it calculated the hours I slept and the sleep pattern graph analysis showed up several hours after I had been awake. However the last two nights it calculated my hours asleep but the sleep, pattern analysis graph never appeared. I've tried restarting the flex and it still doesn't work. Can someone help?? Thanks!

Good summary but what I am keen to understand is what to do with the data.  What is a good sleep pattern?  How can I improve my sleep?

How do I correct a time that was inaccurately logged?

I never see lights on my Flex either.

Can you see an actual pattern of your heart rate on your chart after waking in the morning?  I would like to know what my heart is doing during the night.

Hello!  Trying to add a sleep record - followed your instructions but alas I get the following error message:

There is already a sleep during the time period you tried to create the new sleep.

There is NOT already a sleep during the time period.  The one logged automatically was in error so I deleted it and am trying to add a new one.  Any help appreciated.

In what way is knowing your sleep pattern helpful to the average person?  Other than knowing of you were restless or not what can be done with the information?

Thank You for your article. Every time I did the sleep mode and got the stop watch I thought I did something wrong..Now I know::

I sometimes get that message.  After careful study, I've found that it's actually true.  I've found three common causes:

1) I forgot to turn off sleep mode, so it's still recording me as sleeping today but the sleep record doesn't show up yet because it's not finished.

2) I normally use the 24 hour mode but I still mistakely say I took a nap from 2:00 to 3:00 even though it really was 1400 to 1500.  When I do that, I can't add the nap because there's already a sleep log for 12 hours earlier..

3) Most sleep records start last night (before midnight) and end in the morning today.  If you're looking at yesterday, you won't see the sleep record since it will only be recorded on today's log.
