I keep getting notifications that I've won all kinds badges, walked over 33 miles etc while sitting at my desk and the device is at home, turned off, and charging. Anyone know how to solve this? Thanks!

Are you sure it is turned off?  I ask because it is not uncommon for my Surge to start itself when I charge it, and, per posts from other users, it is not uncommon to log a lot of steps if the Surge (or other tracker) is left on a table which might have a subtle vibration from a nearby computer.
