Accuracy of Calories Burned?

Just been using my Fitbit extensively over the weekend and noticed the calories burned was excessive. It was mainly during walking throughout the day. I reached between 15,000 and 20,000 steps but my GF was with me was using an Apple phone to measure her steps and she was about 5000 to 8000 steps behind what I had supposedly reached. It now makes me question the accuracy of the calorie burn and according to some research the Fitbit is fairly accurate during running but massively inaccurate during walking.  Has there been any definitive independent research on the accuracy of Fitbit? I

Not exactly the answer to your question, but for models with heart rate, calories burned are based on heart rate, not steps.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

Thanks Johnny, That's interesting. Mine is not that up to date and I have never paid much attention to the calories side of things but age and lockdown have not been kind!!!
