My friend and I is similar in height and she weighs about 10kg more. It happened twice this weekend where her step count was nearly double than mine. And we participated in everything the same way. Why the big difference? We did a 100km mountain bike trail race where she achieved 30'600 steps and I only 16'800 steps

I suggest a couple of things to check:
1. Check each person's stride length. It is unusual for two people of the same height and hopefully leg length to have a 2x difference in stride length but it might account for some fraction of the difference.
2. Check whether you are getting correct step counts. Look at the step count and then walk a known number of steps, say 100, and see if the step count is correct. If the count is off then you should check your settings here and check the Surge settings for dominant/non-dominant arm placement. Dominant arm reduces sensitivity and non-dominant arm will increase sensitivity.
