Additional troubleshooting for syncing problems

I bought a Fitbit Surge about two weeks ago. Used one. Had some troubles with it, so I had to solve them. I made some experiments and a lot of research in the Internet and found out some more tips to solve the problems, which are not mentioned in the troubleshooting lists or the manuals. My struggles are described here:

https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Charge-HR/The-bluetooth-on-my-fitbit-is-broken-it-wont-connect-to-my...

Read from there onwards.

Here I will try to summarise what I observed so far, so it is easier for others to read and try to solve their issues. And besides, it is now in the correct product section. Of course, it might be helpful for other models, hopefuly.

First, a quick list to check things:

- check if the battery has enough energy. Charge if necessary.

- check if the tracker isn't connected to another device

- check if the tracker isn't currently syncing

- read and check about the bluetooth antenna. Described below.

- sometimes the app can glitch. Restart it as described below

- the Android can couse troubles too. Check out the settings as described below

The following is a detailed descriptions of the above checklist:

First before everything else, make sure Surge has enough energy in the battery. It will not sync if the battery is very low to save energy for itself. So, if you cannot sync, check the battery and charge it if necessary.

If you have more than one device with the app installed on them, the tracker will connect to one of them. When connected, it will not be visible to the others. This is normal and does not indicate a problem. Other devoces will sync using the Fitbit servers.

Bear in mind that if you install the app on another device and login with the same account, it will start searching the tracker automatically without pairing it again.

If the Surge is currently syncin, it cannot be interrupted. If you tap the command Sync now when a sync is in progress, it will give an error, thus making you falsely thinking that you have trouble. If you cannot sync manually, check if the device is "Refreshing" - you can see it on the Today screen in the app. Check also on another devices as previously described.

The bluetooth antenna in the tracker is located beneath the upper strap band where it connects with the main body of the unit. It is not soldered, instead it is press-fit and glued to the circuir board. It is the same glue that holds the strap band, so it is partially dependent on it's movements. At some point, the antenna may come loose. You can try to press or move the strap band near the place where it is glued to the body - this will move the antenna a bit and eventually will restore the electrical connection to it.

Some probems come from the app. I guess, it is accumulating some errors from bugs and at some point it just blocks itself from working normally. In this case, it helps to open the recent apps list, clear it and start the app again. It is important to clear the list completely. If you remove only the app from it, it will not work.

Some problems come from the Android OS. There are some settings that you can adjust to improve things. Check out these videos:

That is all I can remember so far. It I recall something, I will post it here. Just in case, read the topic to which I posted a link.

Hope this helps.

My Surge would "connect" instantly, but not update data except for today's steps. Setting up device would give me numbers right away, but still wouldn't sync.

Here's how I finally got it to work:

Okay, in the end, I opened the tracker to replace the battery, because it merely makes 8 hours of work. And I saw a lot of oxidation on the contacts of the Bluetooth antenna:

Decided to clean them by carefully scraping with a small knife. The result is that I broke the copper traces that are connecting the board with the antenna and basically left myself without an antenna.

So, decided to make an improvised antenna soldered directly to the circuit board with some wire:

It worked. About an hour. Then it stopped connecting and nothing that I read and tried helped. I thought that I damaged the Bluetooth radio by putting an unmatched antenna. So I gave up.

But! Later I thought a little and decided to try something. I shut down the tracker and left it for about an hour. Then turned it on. It started working immediately and so far it works. Since then are about five days.

So, another tip: if it refuses to sync and even connect at all, shut it down and let it rest for a while. At least twenty minutes

Keep trying, do not give up!

Hope this helps!

By the way, the new battery makes about 12 hours of work. Strange ...

So far it still works. With the new antenna. It glitched once, but turning off and on the bluetooth on the tablet solved the issue. Now I am a happy man.

And I noticed that the battery depletes after 14-18 hour. I guess, when the Bluetooth radio cannot fall in sleep mode, it draws some energy. In the app I turned off the "All day syncing" option, just in case. Still cannot explain why it cannot make a couple of days as expected. I guess, the new battery might be defective...

Will keep you in touch.

Okay, it stopped syncing. Far ago. I tried many many things and finally found it - the exact spot where I have to hit it to start syncing again. It appears to be an electromechanical problem - a bad soldering point or something similar. Something too complicated to fix with an ordinary soldering iron because of the size of the components and the circuit board itself.

So, my suspicion is that most of the fitbits (Surge in particular, but might be other models too) have similar issues, which prevent them from syncing normally.

Well, that's all I can say. Case closed.
