Variou bits of documentation seem to hint that I can but I don't seem to be able to find out how to enable it.

One of Surge's best features @Rexham,

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the + icon.
  2. Tap Track Exercise, and then tap Track at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose your activity, either Run, Walk, or Hike.
  4. If you want your phone to provide voice cues during your activity, tap Cues to set the voice cues you want to hear, and the frequency and volume of the cues.
  5. If you want to control music from the Exercise screen during your activity, tap Music Control and choose your music settings. During your activity you can skip songs but you can't select a specific song.
  6. Tap Start. At any time during your activity, swipe left to see the GPS map.
  7. When you're done with your activity, tap the Pause button and then tap and hold the Finishbutton. An activity summary shows your steps, distance, active minutes, and calories burned as calculated by the sensors on your phone.

The map isn't realtime, it pops up after you hit the finish button on your mobile, then you can view it on the mobile or PC dashboard - you'll see the map under "recent exercise", use the right caret arrow to expand detail.

enjoy! welcome to forums 🙂

What I mean is can I get the same record I get from a run just by activating it on my surge

yes, only the Surge can do this.

Activate the "Walk" exercise, wait for the satelites to settle, click let's go, when done hit the finish flag for the summary.

Close the summary and the next time you look at your dashboard the map will be there as above 🙂

Surge stands apart, the others need to have fitbit app activated on your mobile and your mobile needs to be with you to "borrow" the mobile's GPS feature.

Hmmm, I have no such capability on my Fitbit app dashboard which is on an Android phone.

Long story short, all of the exercise selection and initiation is done exclusively on my Surge.

So you're the one - lol

+ popup shortcuts are very convenient, Rexham is also fortunate to have an iOS device.

I'm sure the Android app is developing, hang in there @shipo, glad to see you here!

I don't under stand the point; the whole reason for the Surge is to operate without a phone linked to it.  Why would Fitbit bother with such a feature for the Surge?

@Rexham, I'm guessing because it isn't there for folks who only have the Surge.
