Elliptical trainer and holding on to the bars to track

I have a new FB Surge HR. The info on tracking for an eliptical trainer says that it tracks it if you hold on to the bars. I have used my Precor for years and learned early on to not rely on the bars but rather to use a free running motion, as maintaing balance helps with your core, plus you can also use handheld weights to add to the upper body conditioning. I just got my FB and have not yet tried it with my Precor, but will do so in the next day or so. So if I don't hold on to the bars, it won't work right? Someone please explain.

It should track it, but if you don't hold on, it might track it as a run. Try it and see! Be sure to let us know.
