Welcome to the Fitbit Community @Scaumy, it's nice to see you here! I saw that you've created this suggestion in our Feature Request board, thanks for sharing this my friend.
Just check if you specified your "dominant hand" setting if you're wearing your surge with your dominant hand! It happened to me before, but after I changed the setting it was a lot better.
Have a nice day!
Was my post helpful? Give it a thumbs up to show your appreciation! Of course, if this was the answer you were looking for, don't forget to make it the Best Answer! Als...

Just the other day I was reading a request for MORE accurate step count during Spin.

All wonderful suggestions can be placed in the Feature Requests Section, it makes the developers easier to see all ideas when they are in one place.. rather than scattered around the forums..
A idea makes more chance to become integrated when placed in the Feature Requests Section.

I was thinking about this too. Adding steps during spinning just doesnt seem to make sense.

@Dannymc A lot of people want the step's to be counted. Probably anger a lot of people if it was removed.

@Scaumy (Matt)
Because people want a (completely arbitrary) measure like "steps" so they can count them towards their (arbitrary) number of 10,000 steps/day. This allows them to win (completely meaningless) badges, or win challenges (that really win them nothing).
If you take that away from people, they have no other reason to exercise... or so this whole shell game of badges and challenges indicates to me.

I don't agree. If you are aiming for 10,000 steps per day and do a really intensive spinning class you want some recognition to see how this contributed to the overall steps. It's really disappointing on a day with a spinning class that it's almost impossible to reach the 10,000 despite burning 400+ calories in the class alone.
And for those who don't underdstand why you would wnat steps - it's not to win badges. If you are aiming to improve your overall health/fitness it really helps to meet the daily goal. Before the Surge, etc had been released I would put my Flex on my shoe which meant I could get 4 - 5,000 steps in spin class. I'm sure the many people asking for a "step algorithm" (heart rate, duration, spinning and how that equates to steps) are asking for this.

I agree with SeatteRos. I am very competitive person and my wife and I compete daily. She has the Charge HR and I have the Surge. She uses the treadmill twice daily and I use the spinning bike in the morning and I run in the evenings. She tells everyone she exercises more than I because every step she takes counts towards her daily goal and my spinning does not convert miles on the spinning bike to steps.
I honestly use my Surge as a motivation tool and not getting "credit" for 45 minutes on the spinning bike should show some credit compared to her treadmill work. Even it is would convert the miles to steps or vise versa.

I have seen posts about how "you don't take steps while spinning or biking"..well here's my response...
I WANT MY STEPS MAN!!!!
Look. If I can get steps for walking to the bathroom to count toward my overall 'health' then a 90 minute bike ride or back to back spin classes should get me some type of recognition when I am 'competing' against my pals in the workweek challenge.
I can ride 100 miles a week and for my efforts accumulate 36,000 spin steps or 15,000 bike steps.
If I walked or 'sashayed' 100 miles a week I would end up with 250,000 steps (approximately).
That's not justice!
And before you say "well there are other apps that calculate those" I say to you, good sir, I didn't spend $249.99 (plus taxes shipping and handling) for a device with those apps!
So I get to do what I want to do with my fitbit!
Good day!

My whole problem with fitbit is they don't think things through.
It seems to me like this and lots of other options can go both ways with options in the app.
Do you want your steps counterd during spinning? Select YES
Do you not want your steps counted during spinning? Select NO
Do you want the screen to lock when swiped? Select YES
Do you not want the screen locked when swiped and jump back to the clock? Select NO
Do you want the ability to Remove - NOT ADD - steps or stairs climbed? Select YES
Do you not want the ability to do this? Select NO
Do you want the alarm to gradually increase in intensity until you shut it off? Select YES
Do you want it to buzz your arm and jolt you out of a deep sleep and scare the SH** out of you then leave it as is.

I understand that we can convert no matter what activity in steps. So, It is not so bad. Maybe you deserve this 10,000 steps. I have a related question climbling a mountain on my bike. It added 125 floors. Can somebody explain me?

I am not sure if anyone has explained this but you are going to get 1 floor for every 10 feet of altitude.
