Send them an email in the help/warranty section and they will ask for a picture and fill out a form. My Surge broke about same time frame and it is covered for a year from date of original purchase and Fitbit replaced it very quickly. Sent me a brand new one and setup takes no time to switch from one surge to new one.

@StuHaire welcome to the Community! Did you contact support in the end? As @TSkaff was saying the process is fairly simple to get a replacement.
