I generally start it using the button but a screen tap should work. Have you tried the button to see if the screen has a problem (assuming the reset doesn't sort it out although I agree that it should).

@Mariefost Welcome to the Fitbit Community! I believe that problem can be solved by performing a restart on your Surge. That will fix any issue with the tracker not responding to some of its features.
