Garmin Edge 510 with Surge for HR Data

Hey everyone,

I have had my Surge for a few days now and I love it. my wife and I both got one and we are both cyclists. I have been amazed at how the Surge can auto detect rides without me starting a ride (using the GPS). it’s quite accurate as well, my last commute into work showed 12.05KM on my Garmin (GPS paired with a speed/cadence sensor) and the surge showed 12.1 km ride without the gps running. I also did a ride with the GPS enabled on the surge by selecting exercise à Bike, and that data was quite comparable to the Garmin as well, but now I have HR data to go with the ride. The problem is that I have no way to Merge the two together and I very often go for long rides that the Fitbit can’t cover from a full charge due to its smaller battery capacity than my Garmin 510. I can easily go for a full day ride with my Garmin.

I have looked around to try and figure out a way to use my surge to track my HR Data and merge it with the Garmin’s GPS and Speed/cadence data but have not been able find anything other than feature requests…. Has anyone figured out a way to do this? My wife doesn’t do super long rides and this isn’t an issue for her, but I like to do my 100Km rides and the Fitbit just can’t hack it with the GPS enabled…. Do I need to ditch the Fitbit and go with a Garmin activity tracker?

100km generally takes my wife and I roughly 5 hours with a nice coffee break, but I also from time to time do full day rides around the 200km mark (not in a while due to work)

But this isn't really the question at hand...

The question at hand is if there is a way to make use of the $500 cycle computer I already own and merge the hr info from that with the GPS and cadence data from my garmin.

I'm not a computer programmer, but in theory, it should be relatively simple to merge the data from the two devices into one "work out" displayed somewhere.

If I use the surge to "bike" with GPS on my ride to and from work and go for a hike in the evening with my wife, the battery is dead at the end of the day... However if the surge only had to track my hr for the bike rides, the battery will last three days a charge.

In over the life of the device that many battery cycles I could significantly increase the usable life of my fitbit by recording gps data with my garmin cycle computer instead of the surge...

Beside that, there is no way the surge would ACTUALLY last 7 hours with the gps on. From just over half battery, I can only get about 1. 5 hours out of it.

@Colinjlyon Hi, there! It sounds like you could make use of our open Web API. It's not for everyone, but if you feel like you can give it a try I recommend checking out our documentation. In addition, we have a Web API development board if you'd like to interact with other users who are already using it.
