How do I use the Surge while on the treadmill?

I'm contemplating purchasing the Surge.  Do I need one of those accessories you attach to your shoe to get treadmill information?

Surge tracks your heart rate and steps, so it should be pretty accurate, at least for steps and calories. It might be a bit off on distance, since your stride is different on a treadmill, but it will be pretty trivial.
