Fitbit don't normally give any advance warning of new trackers so you won't get anything more than speculation on that.
The Flex 2 is waterproof but has a very different feature set than the Surge.
As per previous replies fitbit say no, I have a friend who swims and showers with no problems. But why? It won't explicitly track swimming, at best the arm movements might get you some steps and possibly a bust watch. Flex2 auto tracks pool swimming, but you have to swim consistently for more than ten minutes and maintain a pace. For open water there are other devices out there, for example I use a tickrx chest strap that records my heart rate data. if you want gps distance hr and swolf then you are talking some serious investment in a tri watch like the polar v800 or Fenix 3.
I used to have a Flex before upgrading to the Surge last year. I wore that everywhere, including swimming. It didn't have GPS, though, that's why I upgraded. The Flex didn't know I was swimming, it just counted it as minutes of activity, but it at least gave me credit for my activities. So if you're looking for a relatively cheaper option, there is that, and it should sync up with the app okay.

@dogenzenji As a friendly tip, I would suggest to your friend, to take a look at the Environmental conditions in the Surge manual on page 34, to avoid future issues. And in case that he/she has more questions about it, please advise to contact Customer Support for more information. ![]()
@ChipFallsLisa In regards of the Fitbit Flex, the information that I found in the Flex manual on page 7 is this:
So, if you're looking for a swimming Fitbit, it would be the Fitbit Flex 2, otherwise you might be using your Fitbit in a wrong way; and it might develop hardware issues in the future. Please note that it will affect the warranty options too.
