Hello,

I see there is a all ready a topic by this name, but it didn't answer the question..

Can anybody confirm if the edge 1000 is able to use the Fitbit surge as a HR source?

many thanks,

Arjan

Nope, Garmin devices such as the Fenix or the Vivoactive HR can broadcast there HR using the Ant+ protocol, the Surge cannot do this. I use my Edge 520 with a chest strap, I link to Strava from Garmin connect, and I link Fitbit to Strava. I leave the Surge on it recognises auto cycling which is very hit and miss in my experience, but after a sync it pulls the data from Strava which comes from the Edge. I think it mashes the heart rate data from the Surge together with the accurate GPS from the Edge. In my experience and from other folks on the internet any wrist based HR device (Garmin or Fitbit or whoever) will not be as accurate as a chest strap, I find it lags, cannot keep up with abrupt changes, and does not record peak activity correctly. If I want a device that is not a chest strap and can broadcast to an Edge (Ant) or my phone (Bluetooth) I use a Scosche Rhythm Plus, which sits on your upper arm or bicep and gets good results.
Why the Surge? Well it does a great job of HR monitoring when I am not pushing it hard. So for walking or daily mooching about it is just great.

Thanks for this very helpful response!
I will look into the Scosche Rhythm Plus.
The only thing that I am not clear on is, does the data from Fitbit and garmin connect merge, after they are both updated to Strava?

Festive greeting,

I tried running the GPS on the watch alongside the edge once and Strava took the first one I synched, ignoring the duplicate data. So Fitbit will push GPS data to Strava and so will Garmin connect, Strava ignores duplicates. Looking at the heart rate data on Garmin on a bike ride I am fairly sure that if I use an Edge and have the Surge on my arm but not in GPS mode then Garmin will push to Strava, Fitbit will initially log the ride as Outdoor Bike try to auto recognise and fail terribly, then magically pull the GPS data from Strava on the next sync and bang you get an accurate GPS metric on Fitbit BUT the heart rate data will be mashed from the Surge data on your arm...
Soooo.... if you get the Scosche link it to the Edge and do not use GPS on the Surge I am fairly sure you will get heart rate data from the Surge on Fitbit but from the Scosche on Garmin connect...

Have a good one!

@dogenzenji @HUNTERJAGT Thanks for joining us!  While the two devices and platforms don't sync between them the idea of having strava as a mediator is a great one! Thank you @dogenzenji for posting your experience and your suggestions as this may help other members in the same situation.

I have not seen Strava merge HR data from my Versa to data from my Garmin Edge 530 when both activities are synced to Strava. Both activities show up on Strava.
