My Fitbit Surge is off by thousands of calories!

Hello,

I recently received my Surge and have noticed that it's off by a couple thousand calories. The BMR is changing every day and some days it has trouble syncing to the bluetooth. Most days (at least at first) it said it was around 1904 or 1950 calories for BMR. No activity, nothing. I wouldn't even wear the watch. And now without changing really anything, it's suddenly saying that with a slow BPM, NO EXERCISE at all first thing in the morning I've got already 1,800 calories. I'm finishing the day with 2,000 steps and 4,000 calories? My weight is 178lbs.. there's no way my BMR is 3000+ calories.

And the thing is, I noticed yesterday's calories were off by a lot too in comparison to the past 2 days. On days where I walked 20-30 floors and MILES I burned less calories than on days where I barely put on the fitbit and moved around. I dont even use the app and I dont see any feature to make this work.

What's wrong with my fitbit?

A warm welcome to the Fitbit Community @Kendyl318! Congratulations on your new Surge. Woman HappyHeart

You have really good questions so let me address them one by one. First, I think that your account is just calculating the calories that your body burned during that period of time, without taking in count exercising, since you didn't use for that time, usually this information is not shown in the Account, since it doesn't affect your calories information.

As you may know, when you entered your Profile data, (gender, age, height, etc.) to your Fitbit Account, it starts calculating your calories burned for the period of time that you're not moving or your not wearing the tracker. Since your body continuously burns calories when you're not moving, your Account has this extra feature to give you a better calculation for those Calories.

If you think that your Surge is getting more calories that it should, we need to check your Fitbit.com Dashboard under the section Log > Activity > Calories; and check those calories you will notice that it is not actually tracking but is calculating calories burned when you're not exercising, and when you do wear it you will see the difference in the graph (this graph has also the option to see floors.) Smiley Very Happy

For example, this graph is showing the time line of my calories for this day, as you can see from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM there is an specific amount of calories calculated throughout the day (the tiny red lines), also from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM you will see the large lines that shows calories burned by exercising. Robot wink

About the floors, these are tracked by an altimeter, which is a sensor that calculates altitude based on atmospheric pressure, you'll get floors based on the elevation your trackers senses. Being said that, weather change can occasionally cause your tracker to register an extra floor or two, for example as a gust of wind, if you're too close to AC, drive a car with open window, etc. Floors don't generate calories. Calories are taken from all base step activities or when you manually log an activity. Cat Wink

In regards to your HR, please restart your Surge a couple of times in case that it is having hardware issues and follow these steps to make connect your Surge with your mobile device. Remember to check if your phone is compatible to make sure it will be syncing smoothly.

Hope this helps, I'll be around in case you have more questions! Heart
