SURGE won't sync to my Android device without GPS being on, on the Android!

I recently got my wife a Surge and I am unable to sync it with the Android device unless the Android device has both bluetooth and GPS enabled/on. I used to have a Surge and it would sink with my Android device just via bluetooth.

This is very annoying - to have it synced all day, the GPS has to be on all day and that consumes both battery and data!

Google made a change with the introduction of Android 6 that required location services to be enabled for bluetooth syncing. There's more on this in this thread:

Thank you. I see that...my question now is, is there a solution or is this
just the way we have to do it now?

There's nothing we can do to avoid it unless Google change the rules or fitbit change the way they sync.

If it is a problem then you can choose to not have all day sync in use, just sync every now and then and switch location services on just to sync.

I think it differs from person to person but I find that if I leave location services on there is only a noticeable battery drain if apps use it and no noticeable drain if they don't. My setup is to only sync when I open the app which means that I - luckily - have no issues.
