When I press the select button to start stopwatch nothing happens. Have gone to elliptical, pressed the tick in the bottom right hand corner but when I press the select button, stopwatch won't start. Seems to be the same on other workouts too.

A warm welcome to our Fitbit Community family @Tunafish! That's odd! Have you tried to restart your Surge, it might be that it is just stuck. Is the screen working? You can pick the "Elliptical" workout on the screen too, then you can tap on the check mark on the corner to start the activity too.
