The new sleep log set-up means I have to log in separately from what I do to record everything else just to check the sleep log every morning. The log is seldom accurate as to wake up times and needs to be edited daily. Now it is harder to get to the page, it doesn't respond to the edit I make, and it is harder to understand than the previous setup. Why did you mess with it and can you put it back to the way it was?

A warm welcome to our Fitbit Community family @Dustymark!
I'm glad to know that you're using your tracker to check your sleep behavior! You don't need to log in separately your sleep. Sleep Schedule feature is a way to use a sleep goal in combination with bedtime and wake up goals to help Fitbit users get more consistent sleep! You can access to this option by going to your Fitbit App > tap on your sleep tile > tap on the gear icon in the upper right corner > tap on Sleep Schedule.
If you sleep patterns are not being accurate please restart your Surge and try it out the next day. To edit an sleep log in a mobile device; enter to the Fitbit App > tap on your sleep tile > tap on the little pencil in the upper right corner.
In the Fitbit.com Dashboard you can tap on Log > Sleep > Pick the day > Edit Sleep. The option Log Sleep is in case that you want to enter a new log (it's usually used for people that is using trackers that don't have the auto-sleep detection).
Please let me know if you continue having issues with your sleep!
Hope this helps!
