Steps not calculating properly

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.
I have a Surge and a Blaze. Have used both on walks. Based on the miles I walk my steps do not calculate properly. (5 miles = 10,000 steps for me) I have measured my stride length and have entered it in my personal information. (26.5") Still does not help as the information seems to be ignored. When I finish a walk based on the information on my watch I calculate my stride at 3'. I walk with my husband same distance and he will have a thousand more steps than me at the end. He is 6'1" and his stride length is ( 30.5 ") so I would think I would have more steps than him. I have switched settings to dominate arm didn't help.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a Surge and my steps have dropped by 20% in the last 2 days.  I was averaging about 11,500/12,000 steps on a 6.7 mile walk and now I'm about 10,000.  I would expect maybe a 100 or 200 step difference on the same distance, not a couple of 1000.  I called them yesterday and they told me to re-set which I did.  I will check today when I go out later but my guess nothing will change.  If not I'm calling Fitbit again tomorrow.  Basically the guy told me to do the control, Alt, Delete.  I'll try and give you an update.  I'm hoping someone has a solution.

Well the reset I was told to do didn't work.  Probably worse.  I'm going to try something else tomorrow morning.  I going to do my walk as an ellipitical workout and see what it calculates in steps and distance.  Fitbit will be getting a call tomorrow.  Not the least bit happy !!!

I reset my Surge with the 3 power off/on. Went for my walk 4.55 miles and only got 6666 steps. Which when I calculate makes my stride length at 41.5 inches. I have my stride length set at 26.5 inches. My husband calculated his walk and his stride length matches what he has his Surge set at 30.5" We walked exact same route at the same time.

Hey my friends @Enesp @lshuler, welcome to the Fitbit Community Woman Very Happy

For wrist-based trackers, its important to specify whether you wear the tracker on your dominant or non-dominant wrist:

  • The dominant wrist setting decreases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any over counting of steps when your body is not moving.
  • The non-dominant wrist setting increases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any under counting of steps. Non-dominant is the default.

In addition to dominance (right or left), Fitbit Alta also needs to know which wrist you prefer to wear the tracker on. Tracker location helps orient the screen correctly in addition to adjusting the sensitivity of step detection.

To change your settings, in the Fitbit app go to Account tab and choose your tracker at the top of the screen.

If you feel that your step count and distance are inaccurate, first make sure the wrist placement settings are correct. You may also want to manually adjust the stride length that we calculated automatically based on your height and gender. For more information, see How do I measure and adjust my stride length?

If the inaccuracy persist, I'd recommend getting in touch with Customer Support directly so they can further investigate where the issue is coming from. Don't forget to mention the steps you've done to avoid getting the same ones.

Have a nice start of the week!

Sorry hit the wrong thing. Something changed last week to cause a big drop from my 25 to 30 other walks as my baseline. I can see maybe a 100 or 200 variance from one walk to the next not 1000 +. Thanks for the response. I'll keep ya posted
